“Libra” is a portrait of endurance—the quiet, unshakable strength of a woman who withstands every difficulty life places before her.
Inspired by Shim Chong, the heroine of Hwang Sok-yong’s novel, the work follows the spirit of a woman whose life is repeatedly overturned by forces beyond her control. Sold at fifteen and displaced from her homeland, she is symbolically stripped of her former identity and renamed Lenhwa, meaning “lotus flower.” Her circumstances, her surroundings, and even her names repeatedly change, yet she continually adapts and survives.
Her strength is not hardness. Like a rock against the movement of the sea, she endures while remaining sensual, vulnerable, and profoundly alive.
Hidden above her right shoulder is the symbol of Libra—a subtle, personal signature within the composition. It echoes the idea of balance at the heart of the work: between fragility and resilience, change and constancy, what life takes from us and what it can never take away.
“Libra” is an homage to resilience—to the ability to pass through transformation and hardship without losing the essential self within.
